part i.
Character name: Garrus Vakarian
Fandom: Mass Effect
Species (vampire, werewolf, what have you): Turian
Character powers: Garrus has no particular 'powers' to speak of. His increased speed and strength (at least compared to the average human) and fighting abilities are derived from the fact that he is a turian or simply due to his many years as a soldier. Garrus is quite skilled with technology. He is capable of hacking systems and decryption, as well as complex programming. As engineering is concerned his specialty is weapons, and he is known to have the skills to calibrate the hell out of a ship's main gun, squeezing every bit of deadly firepower out of it. He also possesses exceptional skill in marksmanship.
part ii.
1.) Is it acceptable for your character to be mind-controlled or persuaded? How susceptible are they to mind control, hypnotism, or suggestion?
Definitely. Garrus has zero experience when it comes to things like mind-control. The closest thing that exists to mind-control in his universe is indoctrination, and even that requires an exceptionally strong will to resist even marginally. It would have to be an ability of some sort, however, and not just a case of smooth talking as he has a tendency to be mistrustful otherwise.
2.) Is it acceptable for your character to have their mind read? Does this include traumatic memories? What is their mind like (disturbing, orderly, joyful, surprisingly empty, etc.)? If the character has psychic walls or preventative measures against psychic interference, please explain.
Yes, quite acceptable. As mentioned earlier he has no experience with any sort of mental attacks, mind control, or generalized probing of the mind. Therefore, he has no barriers against it if someone were to have the skill to read his mind like a book. His mind would be quite orderly in general with things like anxieties and grievances walled off from the rest. His mind would appear quite literally alien to someone poking around in it, simply because it is in his nature to perceive the world differently.
3.) Are thoughts mentioned in narration acceptable for a telepath to pick up?
Yep! Once again, reiterating his total lack of mental shielding.
4.) What about emotions, in the case of an empath? What sort of general emotional reading would such a character receive from yours?
Garrus' emotions are one thing he is definitely guarded about, though he is not without potentially obvious clues as to his true feelings. An empath could definitely look beneath the surface to how he was really feeling, if it were their ability to do so. I'd say if being an "empath" was a synonym for being particularly perceptive then it would be quite difficult, simply because his facial cues and body language would just be downright strange! There would definitely be an air of sadness about him, mixed with worry.
5.) Are there any aspects of your character's mind, emotions, or memories you would like to be picked up, mentioned, or used in character? Conversely, is there anything that should not be noticed, or at least never mentioned?
If it were a topic of interest to someone that he spends a lot of his time worrying about the impending doom of a galaxy he'll never see again, then yes. Also, perhaps his former relationship with a human, particularly as that's another topic his mind tends to wander off to.
part iii.
1.) Physically speaking, what stands out about your character? Imposing size? Physical scarring? Tattoos?
This did make me chuckle a little. Besides being a big giant turian in heavy combat armor he does have noticeable scarring across the right side of his face and neck. Also the fact that he is never ever without his visor if he can help it. He probably sleeps in the thing.
2.) Is your character immune to any of the following: poisons, chemical agents, telekinetic influence, radiation, or types of illnesses?
Poisons may affect him differently or have no affect whatsoever, given his biology. On the other hand, seemingly harmless things are poisonous to a turian (like most people's food). The same goes for chemicals. It really depends on the substance (that is to say, it's important to know what the poison/chemical is and how it acts on the body to determine the affects based on what is known about canon biology). No in-bred immunities to telekinetic influence. His armor is equipped to deal with biotics (which is essentially telekinesis) but that is one of those things that may not work as intended in Baedal. He is immune to low level radiation, since that is the norm on his home planet. Higher levels may cause a reaction. Most diseases wouldn't affect him, though there have been illnesses documented that would infect both levo- and dextro-amino species, so it is possible to share germs.
3.) Is your character physiologically different from a human in any way? This can include their blood, skin, hair, et cetera being made up of something unusual or simply differing in construction and durability.
Yes, in every way possible, being a turian. For the specific hows and whys, it is best to consult the wiki!
4.) Are you amenable to having your character be harmed in any way? How far are you comfortable with injury to you character going? Does this include being fed on by vampires, willingly or unwillingly?
Yes, of course! It is always best to discuss things OOCly prior to it happening, naturally, but I am very open to most anything within reason. Temporarily debilitating injury is fine, I would just prefer that nothing valuable be permanently removed! Being vampire food is perfectly fine, if there's a vampire out there desperate enough to try that. I wonder if a vampire would have an allergic reaction...
5.) Is it acceptable for other characters with abilities of shapeshifting or disguise to imitate your character? Does this include ability mimicry?
Quite! He doesn't have any actual powers, so it is difficult to say regarding the abilities. If a shapeshifter were capable of mimicking his marksmanship abilities, more power to them! Otherwise, his "abilities" are knowledge-based, which may or may not be an issue.
part iv.
1.) Can your character's presence or aura be noticed by other characters, and how would it look/feel to them? How would it manifest to a character with no supernatural abilities, if at all?
Probably not. It would probably be boring and unremarkable because there's nothing particularly special about him magically or spiritually or what have you.
2.) Can your character be affected by magic spells and curses?
Oh geez yes. And he'd never even know what hit him.
3.) Can your character be affected by sin and corruption, and be tempted toward expressing their darker urges (of whatever flavor)?
Garrus has a temper, but a very strong sense of justice. He is very set on that and could never be convinced of doing something that wasn't in line with what he felt was the right thing to do. Now, how he arrives at that goal is the variable. He may take out those he considers to be the bad guys in cruel and unusual ways or be fairly open-minded when it came to what it takes to get the job done.
4. What sort of sins is the character prone toward, and how might they best be tempted, if you are interested in such an event?
Wrath. As stated, he has a temper and stress makes him even quicker to anger. There's a few different ways of accomplishing that goal, if someone wanted to. On the other hand, he is unlikely to ever be prone to lust or anything in that vein. Anything like that makes him extremely nervous and awkward, not to mention that dating outside the species might have been a one time thing.
5.) Are you amenable to the character receiving prophetic visions, including as part of a plot?
Yes, very!
part v.
1. Is threadjacking allowed? Under what circumstances?
Yes, please! That's how fun happens!
2. Is it acceptable for canonmates that are updated further than yours to inform your character of events yours has not yet experienced?
Yessss. Oh, I think that would be so fun, assuming any of his canonmates show up.
3. Are there triggering or upsetting topics you would like other characters to avoid mentioning to yours for the sake of continued comfort (racist words, homophobia, self-injury, etc.)?
The only thing I find somewhat triggery is graphic violence towards children or animals. Like if that should (for some reason) be described in a lot of detail I have to read in some situation for god knows why. In that case, a warning would be appreciated so I know what I'm walking into. Implications of these things are acceptable and I'm not going to blacklist anyone for having characters with situations involving those topics in their backstory or otherwise. I am quite capable of separating IC from OOC and have played racist/sexist/whateverist characters myself so none of that bothers me in an IC environment. A good rule is to simply provide a trigger warning just in case, if not for me then for anyone else involved. Plus, if there's any questions about whether or not something's cool, it's fine to ask!
4. Are there any additions you would like us to make to this survey?
Nope!
